Leadership Shows Up When It Matters Most

Some newsletters are inspired by executive coaching sessions. Others by conversations with CEOs, HR leaders, or organizations navigating change. This one comes from a much more personal place.

I am Dominican, but Venezuela has become part of my family's story. My husband is Venezuelan, many of my relatives are Venezuelan, and through the years I've built deep friendships and professional relationships with people across the country. Like so many others, the past few days have been spent checking in on loved ones, hoping for good news after the recent earthquakes. Thankfully, my family is safe. Many others are now facing loss, uncertainty, and the difficult road ahead.

As I watched the images, read the stories, and spoke with people both inside and outside of Venezuela, I couldn't help but think about leadership. Not leadership inside organizations....Leadership in its purest form.

Because leadership has a way of revealing itself when circumstances are at their most difficult. It's easy to speak about values when life is predictable; It's much harder to live them when people are suffering.

Throughout this tragedy, I have witnessed two very different responses. I've seen individuals in positions of authority who failed to rise to the moment, and reports from humanitarian organizations and international observers describing significant challenges in getting aid to the people who need it most.

But I've also witnessed something much more powerful. Neighbors helping neighbors. Volunteers organizing within hours. Communities collecting food, medicine, clothing, and supplies. People from different countries, cultures, professions, and beliefs coming together with one shared purpose: To help another human being.

Leadership isn't reserved for people with titles, it isn't something we practice only in boardrooms or during strategic planning sessions. Leadership is influence.

• → It's choosing to act when others hesitate.
• → It's deciding that someone else's pain deserves your attention.
• → It's reminding people that they are not alone.

One of the most beautiful things I've seen over the past several days has been the Venezuelan community, both inside and outside the country, mobilizing almost immediately. People who had never considered themselves leaders stepped forward. They organized donation drives, coordinated logistics, verified information, and found ways to get critical supplies directly to families in need.

That is what empathy looks like in action.

And perhaps that's the kind of leadership our world needs more of.
